Brenda Hartill – ‘Leleque I’ Print

#10684

Etching, ed. 4/200, 1993

75×62 cm

Born in London in 1952, Brenda Hartill emigrated to New Zealand with her parents in the late 1950s and was educated there, graduating with FA honours at the Elam School of Fine Art Auckland. She returned to London in the late 1960s to study at the Central School of Art and Design, specialising in Theatrical Design. She then worked as a freelance designer in UK theatre, including the West End, and the National Theatre. In the early eighties, she turned to printmaking and has successfully published her own prints since. She is a member of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers, the Rye Society of Artists, and the Pure Arts Group.  Her work explores the texture, pattern, and light of the landscape, and ranges from finely drawn figurative works to bold, heavily embossed abstract images. For the past 10 years she has been most interested in drawing abstract imagery from the landscape, rugged mountain erosion, the structure of the land, and the dynamics of plant growth.

In this bold print Hartill explores the texture, pattern, and light of the landscape. She loves the strong light and shadow of Southern Europe, and remote New Zealand, where she grew up, as well as the gentler greyness of the light in London and Sussex.
