Edna Lumb (1932-1992)

Painter, draughtsman, printmaker and teacher, born in Leeds, Yorkshire. Edna won a scholarship to Leeds Junior Art School aged 14. After attending Leeds College of Art, 1948–53, she taught unenthusiastically for a number of years and then – with typical steely determination, decided to paint full-time, buying a van for her trips. She found her subject in industry, depicting machinery meticulously, but tinged with poetry. She believed “the excitement I feel about mills, factories, quarries, machinery, sewers and industrial constructions can enable people to see beauty in the drama of components and power.” Her 1973 Bradford Industrial Museum show Components of Power won much acclaim.
