Angela is a textile artist who loves to recreate designs from medieval and Renaissance buildings like the Dario Palace in Venice. Historic houses and their decorations are fragile, which she reflects in the delicate threads and beading of her embroideries.

‘The inspiration for this piece comes from the surface decoration of a palace on the Grand Canal in Venice called Palazzo Dario. I saw it while I was studying in Venice many years ago and it is one of the smaller Renaissance palaces and to me, perfectly formed’. Angela McGahan

Angela’s work starts with a simple design on layers of colourful, opulent fabrics. The work then grows organically as she cuts through the surface layers at different points and to different depths to expose the fabrics beneath. She likes the idea of things being slightly hidden, where one gets a glimpse of something beautiful, but is frustrated from seeing the whole thing by layers over the surface.
