Original print; date unknown.

Emerging from the river fog, two brick ovens tower over the nearby trees. The ovens are quiet at the moment, not disturbing the peaceful scene. The name ‘Bottle Oven’ refers to the unusual shape of the ovens. David was interested in English landscapes. Here he has contrasted a small scene of Shropshire industry with the plants and wildlife close by.

David Gentleman (born in 1930) studied at St Albans School of Art, Cornwall and the Royal College of Art, London. Best-known for his watercolour landscapes, David Gentleman, also created some of the most iconic images of postwar Britain. Throughout his career he has worked in a variety of media and scales, from postage stamps to a platform-length mural for Charing Cross tube station.
