Jim Grundy is inspired by a variety of sources – from natural objects which show the contrast between order and chaos to a repeated pattern on wallpaper – all of which become metaphors for more universal themes. In this particular image, his collection of influences and pre-occupations manifests itself in the two ambiguous organic shapes, both resembling fruits but also a heart and a grasping hand. For Grundy what is important is not representation in the traditional sense but that the lines, shapes and colours reference world experience.
