Jim Grundy is inspired by a variety of sources – from natural objects that show the contrast between order and chaos to a repeated pattern on wallpaper – all of which become metaphors for more universal themes. In this particular image, his collection of influences and preoccupations manifests itself in the two ambiguous organic shapes, both resembling fruits but also a heart and a grasping hand. For Grundy what is important is not representation in the traditional sense but that the lines, shapes, and colours reference world experience.
